An ability to appreciate, enjoy, and work within the Visual Arts is an essential part of human nature. The North High Visual Arts group offers courses and professional, practicing instructions to guide students toward the development of their creative talents in Drawing, Painting, and Pottery. Our students and staff are award winners recognized throughout Salem and the State of Oregon for consistent, high quality work.

This is an introductory course in drawing, painting, design, printmaking and mixed media. It’s designed to give the non-art student the basic skills and knowledge to take more advanced art courses.

Prerequisite: None (suggested for 9th graders and for anyone starting out in Art)

Drawing I  Fine/App Arts Credit=0.5 OUS: Yes NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 9-12

In Drawing I, students will develop basic drawing skills. This class places emphasis on the elements and principle of design, compostion, appreciation of drawing as an art form, critical analysis and cultural awareness. Students will explore a variety of media, styles, subject matter and techniques.

Drawing II Fine/App Arts Credit=0.5 OUS: Yes NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 10-12

Drawing II builds on the skills and concepts of Drawing I. A stronger emphasis is placed on the concepts involved with the principles of design. Students have more flexibility in choice of media for drawings and concepts are developed in more depth.

Advanced Drawing Fine/App Arts Credit=0.5 OUS: Yes NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 11-12

Advanced Drawing builds upon the skills and concepts of Drawing I and II. Emphasis is placed upon development of personal style as well as setting and achieving personal goals in the drawing media.

Prerequisite: Drawing II

Painting I  Fine/App Arts Credit=0.5 OUS: Yes NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 10-12

In Painting I, students will develop basic painting skills. This class places emphasis on the elements and principle of design, composition, appreciation of painting as an art form, critical analysis, historical and cultural awareness. Students will explore a variety of media, styles, subject matter and techniques.

Painting II  Fine/App Arts Credit=0.5 OUS: Yes NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 10-12

Painting II builds on the skills and concepts of Painting I. A stronger emphasis is placed on historical influence and concepts involved with the principles of design. Students have more flexibility in choice of media for paintings and concepts are developed in more depth.

Advanced Painting  Fine/App Arts Credit=0.5 OUS: Yes NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 11-12

Advanced Painting builds upon the skills and concepts of Painting I and II. Emphasis is placed upon development of personal style as well as setting and achieving personal goals in the drawing media.

Prerequisite: Painting II

Pottery I Fine/App Arts Credit=0.5 OUS: Yes NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 10-12

In Pottery I, students will develop basic pottery skills. This class covers a variety of approaches to pottery including hand-built, wheel-thrown, and sculptural forms. Additionally, students may also explore a variety of glazing and firing techniques. This class places emphasis on principles of design, composition, craftsmanship, appreciation of pottery as a art form, and critical and historical/cultural awareness.

Pottery II Fine/App Arts Credit=0.5 OUS: Yes NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 10-12

Pottery II draws from the concepts and skills of Pottery I. In Pottery II, students refine skills and explore additional techniques and forms.

Advanced Pottery  Fine/App Arts Credit=0.5 OUS: Yes NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 10-12

Advance Pottery draws from the concepts and skills of Pottery I and II. In Advanced Pottery, students may elect to pursue individual direction, explore career alternatives, and work towards personal refinement. This class allows the student to explore deeper clay topics like socio-political stoneware and glazing techniques.

Calligraphy I  Fine/App Arts Credit=0.5 OUS: Yes NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 10-12

Calligraphy I is a one-semester course focusing on calligraphy styles of lettering and design applications. Emphasis is placed on development of technique and principles of page design.

Digital Photography I  Fine/App Arts Credit=0.5 OUS: No NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 9-12

Students learn basic techniques and processes of digital photography. Different photography techniques will be explored as well as image manipulation with computer software. Students learn to take, edit, and discuss their images. Suggested that you have access to a camera or a smart phone with a camera.

Lightwave 3D Animation 1  Fine/App Arts Credit=0.5 OUS: No NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 10-12

Used in the movie, television and game design industries, LightWave 3-d Animation is an exciting 3D animation course designed to inspire the creative use of graphics, illustration, motion an strategy. Students will create dazzling forms and animate them. Class will include story boarding, character design and scene development.

Prerequisite: Computer literacy & keyboarding

AP Studio Art  Fine/App Arts Credit=0.5 OUS: Yes NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 11-12

This course is designed to prepare students for the AP Studio Art Portfolio Review. It will cover a wide range 2-D and 3-D media. Students will complete a professional portfolio including at least 24 college level artworks.
