North Salem High School Choir Department
About Our Choir Program
Few Music Departments in the Salem area and around the State of Oregon have received as many awards and as much praise as has the North High Music Department. Our well-rounded and outstanding music department offers vocal and instrumental training and performance opportunities in a variety of ensembles ranging from beginning to advanced levels. Soloists and ensembles throughout the department have won numerous awards at local, state, regional, and national levels. Additionally, the North Salem Music Department has been honored twice in the recent past as a Grammy Foundation “Signature School.” Vocal music consists of everything from beginning and intermediate choirs for men and women to intermediate and advanced level mixed choirs.
Viking Men
Chorus I -(Viking Men) Fine/App Arts Credit=1.0 OUS: No NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 9-12
Open to students interested in singing music for tenor and bass voices. Instruction will focus on the development of individual and group technique, the ability to carry one’s own part independently, music reading skills, and preparation of music for public performance. — both during and outside of the school day–as part of the the course.

Viking Women
Chorus 2 -( Viking Women) UC202S1/S2 Fine/App Arts Credit=1.0 OUS: No NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 9-12
Open to students interested in singing music for treble voices. Instruction will focus on the development of individual and group vocal technique, the ability to carry one’s own part independently, music reading skills. and preparation of music for public performance. Students are required to participate in some performances–both during and outside of the school day–as part of the course work .

Nordic Choir
Intermediate Choir – (Nordic Choir) Fine/App Arts Credit=1.0 OUS: No NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 10-12
Intermediate Choir Nordic Choir is a high level, auditioned mixed choir. Students interested in joining Nordic Choir should have previous successful choral experience and a strong foundation of vocal skills and musicianship. Attention will be given to continuing to develop each singer’s vocal instrument, improved technique in breath control, freedom of tone production, extension of range, clarity of diction, expressive singing, accurate pitch, and further development of musical knowledge and musicianship skills. The ability to sight-read with increased rhythmic and pitch accuracy will also be stressed. This choir will study and perform music from a wide range of styles, languages, and historical periods. Nordic Choir performs at a wide variety of school concerts, regional festivals and competitions, and civic and community events and is the only choral group eligible to compete at the state level.
