Physical Education

The fitness level of our nation is moving in the wrong direction. North Salem High School is committed to changing that trend by focusing our activities on fitness for a lifetime. The facilities here are second to none including a newly remodeled 5,800 square foot fitness center, three gyms, a dance room, and two other multipurpose areas. The North Salem High School Physical Education Department wants to encourage our students to use the skills learned to live a long healthy life.

Personal Fitness  Physical Education Credit=0.5 OUS: No NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : No Grade Level: 9

Personal Fitness will provide students the opportunity to experience a wide variety of fitness activities and knowledge needed to maintain desired levels of fitness throughout their lifetime. Students will participate in fitness testing, aerobic activities, weight training, walking, jogging, and the writing of a personal fitness plan. In addition, this course will teach selected lifetime fitness activities to include individual/dual team sports.

Individual and Team Sports  Physical Education Credit=0.5 OUS: No NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : No Grade Level: 9-12

Individual and Team Sports will focus on the development of motor skills and social behaviors through a variety of individual, dual team sports. Students will be required to participate in individual, dual, and team sports.

Prerequisite: Personal Fitness

Aerobic Fitness  Physical Education Credit=0.5 OUS: No NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : No Grade Level: 10-12

This course is designed to develop an understanding of the relationship between successful daily living concepts and personal fitness. It is also designed to involve students in activities that promote fitness.

Weight Training  Physical Education Credit=0.5 OUS: No NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : No Grade Level: 9-12

Weight Training will provide students the opportunity to become exposed to terminology, spotting, safety, training with weight machines, and free weights. In addition students will conclude with developing and implementing a personal weight training program.

Prerequisite: Personal Fitness

Advanced Weight Training Physical Education  Physical Education Credit=0.5 OUS: No NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : No Grade Level: 9-12

Advance Weight training will focus on the core lifts as well as individual auxiliary lifts with free weights developed in Weight Training. Students will review safety and spotting techniques prior to the development and implementation of a personal program with a progression in volume, intensity, and complexity of movement. In addition to developing a program, students will deepen their understanding of nutrition and effects of chemicals (steroids) on the body.

Introduction to Dance  Physical Education Credit=0.5 OUS: No NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 9-12

This is an introductory course focusing on the development of coordination, rhythm, strength, flexibility, balance, technique, and basic dance steps and movement combinations. Students will work individually and cooperatively to learn choreographed jazz, folk, modern, and social dances.

Prerequisite: Personal Fitness

Dance 2 (Intermediate Dance)  Physical Education Credit=0.5 OUS: No NCAA: No Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 9-12

This course is an intermediate course focusing on the improvement of coordination, rhythm, strength, flexibility, balance and technique, using more challenging dance steps and movement combinations. Students will work individually and cooperatively to learn choreographed jazz, folk, modern, and social dances and to choreograph routines. This class is for students who are above the level of beginner.

Prerequisite: A or B in Introduction to Dance , Instructor permission
