NSHS Hosts Event ‘UNPREPARED’

2018-04-24T07:11:44+00:00 April 12th, 2018|

On May 1st,  The North Salem Viking Association and the American Red Cross have partnered with the Oregon Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Portland Post of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) to host a community awareness event to highlight seismic risks and vulnerabilities in Oregon. The event will feature a showing of the Oregon Public Broadcasting and Oregon Field Guide documentary UNPREPARED. A panel of local engineers and emergency managers as well as Allison Pyrch and Chris Goldfinger, professionals featured in the documentary, will be available for questions following the film. The panel will answer questions about the Cascadia Event as well as other local seismic risks and how Salem and Oregon are preparing. The event is free and open to all ages. Door prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the event. We will also have representatives from many local emergency preparedness organizations on hand to answer questions, provide information, and offer services to get Salem prepared! The award winning UNPREPARED documentary highlights our seismic risks in Oregon and the potential for major disruption after the expected 9.0 Cascadia earthquake and tsunami. It also starts the conversation about what we as Oregonians can do to be more prepared, both individually and as a community.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools is happy to announce we will be hosting two events to feature the documentary Screenagers. This documentary is designed to delve into the struggles our students face with technology and the issues of social media, video games, academics and internet addiction.

When are these showings?

  • Wednesday, April 11 |  Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty St. SE, Salem
  • Tuesday, April 24 |  Keizer Civic Center, 930 Chemawa Road NE, Keizer

We will also be hosting a Q&A panel consisting of members of SKPS staff, Salem and Keizer Police Departments, and Marion County Health Department. This panel is designed to continue the important dialogue with our parents and community members around how we can keep our students safe and healthy online. This will not be an opportunity for school specific concerns or personal matters concerning students. Debbie Joa, Prevention and Protection Coordinator for SKPS, will be at the event should a parent/guardian wish to privately discuss a personal matter involving their child.  Debbie will then forward information to the appropriate school administrator.
